Hey there fellow dev! ๐Ÿ‘‹๐Ÿป Welcome back! If you are new here, be sure to check out the first part of the series, otherwise skip right ahead to the 6th misconception.

But first; a recap...

In the first part of this series, we looked at some common misconceptions that those outside of tech have about developers. Here's a quick summary:

  • We are anti-social (maybe introverted but not anti-social)
  • We are all gamers (nope, not all of us)
  • We can solve ANY tech issue ((DEV)initely not)
  • We are all geeks and nerds (false, there's the "odd" ones that are not nerdy nor geeky)
  • We all have a poor sense of fashion and never ever dress up for anything (but what if our uniform really is hoodies and sweatpants? Nothing we can do about that fellas ๐Ÿ˜‚)

Without further ado, let us hop right into it! ๐Ÿ›ธ

Author's note: I shall refer to web devs, software engineers and the like as "devs" henceforth. Please bare with me! ๐Ÿ™‡๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ

Misconception #6: All devs are geniuses ๐Ÿง

You're a genius Actually, that's flattering. Lovely to see that some people have that view of us, hehe. ๐Ÿ˜… The truth is that some of us might be. I do not rule out that possibility. However, you don't need to have an IQ of 200 to be in tech. Most of us techies are just mere mortals after all. Again, sorry to disappoint. ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ

Misconception #7: Devs are powered by coffee and nothing else โ˜•

Coffee addiction This one is a bit hilarious and frankly said, it is not all that wrong. However, there's devs that run on tea too. Others prefer energy drinks (-glares at her colleagues-). And then there's me; no preference. H2O is enough for me. ๐Ÿ˜œ (I like natural fruit juices too. Boring, I know.)

Misconception #8: All devs have a Mac ๐Ÿ’ป

-sad Windows PC sounds- But seriously, though Macs are somewhat "predominant" (excuse the lack of statistics and data to back up this statement ๐Ÿ˜…), there is also a great deal of devs out there that have a Windows PC. And the special, super powered ones that have some Linux powered PCs of sorts.

Long story short: we have our preferences and at times some of us gotta work with what we have. C'est la tech vie (Coincidentally, Macs are hard to afford, so that's that. ๐Ÿค‘)

Misconception #9: Devs code all the time ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿปโ€๐Ÿ’ป๐Ÿ‘จ๐Ÿปโ€๐Ÿ’ป

We like to breathe in between every line of code too, in case you were wondering. ๐Ÿ˜ค Now, for some devs this is kind of true though, they code waaay too much and waaay too often. (May I add: please get some darn sleep?! ๐Ÿ˜ด). However, I know several devs that have other hobbies that have NOTHING to do with programming. Examples include: drawing, doing CrossFit, playing tennis, practicing archery, playing drums and more.

Yeeep, devs surely do more than just coding all the time. Rest assured, we are mere mortals just like you. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Misconception #10: Devs swim in pools full of money ๐Ÿค‘

Sure, some do. Most don't (at least not in the early days). Besides, what is a fortune anyway? I'll tell you: a super-duper vague metric used to sometimes assume levels of accomplishment in life. Truth is, that our jobs are in high demand. So with high demand, come (usually) juicy salaries ๐Ÿ’ฐ. Not a fortune perhaps, but you can live quite comfortably (add to that a side gig, and BOOM, financial freedom is in sight!). Bottom-line: Not everyone is a millionaire in this field (and we don't have to be. Or do we? ๐Ÿค”)

Wrapping up

It's a wrap! Thanks for sticking around for this long. Hope you enjoyed this little series. If you did (or didn't), be sure to join the conversation in the comments. What are some assumptions non-tech people have made of you? Drop them below, I love to read your comments! ๐Ÿคฉ

That's all folks! ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿปโ€๐Ÿ’ป๐Ÿ‘จ๐Ÿปโ€๐Ÿ’ป See you soon!

Hasta la vista baby
